JustFoodForDogs Recalls Three Daily Diets Due to Possible Listeria Contamination

JustFoodForDogs (JFFD), a Los Alamitos, California-based pet food retailer, is voluntarily recalling its Beef & Russet Potato, Fish & Sweet Potato, and Turducken dog food meals due to possible listeria contamination.

The recall affects the above-mentioned JFFD products with Best By lot code dates of 11/01/18 through 01/14/19. The products being recalled were sold refrigerated or frozen and include all sizes offered (7, 14, 18, and 72 ounces).

The recalled products were distributed through 11 JFFD retail locations and three Pet Food Express locations in Southern California and 10 Pet Food Express locations in Northern California.

The company stated in a press release that the green beans used in these meals may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This type of bacteria can affect animals eating the product and poses a risk to humans who may have intentionally or unintentionally ingested the dog food or through contact with contaminated feces from a pet who has eaten the food.

Listeriosis, a serious infection caused by the listeria bacteria, is rare in dogs. Common signs of infection include diarrhea and vomiting. However, more serious symptoms, such as fever, muscular and respiratory signs, abortion, and even death, are possible. If your dog has consumed the recalled products and displays these symptoms, contact your veterinarian.

Infected animals can shed the bacteria through their feces and thus serve as a source of infection for humans, especially if they have not washed their hands. But the most common way people are affected is by consuming contaminated food. Consumers who exhibit signs of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, aches, and fever after potential exposure should contact their health care provider.

While no confirmed cases of listeriosis have been reported, there have been reports of short-term symptoms (diarrhea and vomiting) in some dogs, the release stated. There have been no reports of human illness to date.

JFFD discovered the potential for contamination after a consumer of JFFD products reported that her dogs had become ill. Tests to date confirm that green beans purchased from a restaurant supply distributor were positive for Listeria monocytogenes, the release stated. The distributor has voluntarily put a product hold on the distribution of these green beans to restaurants and other human food retailers, and JFFD is currently making these recipes available without green beans until the matter is resolved.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled products from a JFFD store should contact the company at 866-726-9509 (9 a.m.-7 p.m. PST, seven days a week) for a full credit or refund. Consumers who have purchased the recalled products from Pet Food Express should return the items to any Pet Food Express location for a full credit or refund.
