South Carolina Man’s Clever Shark Detection Test Goes Viral

Since the release of the movie Jaws, the ocean and its apex predator, the shark, have struck fear in the hearts of many. The hysteria and panic surrounding the presence of sharks in the ocean has led people to try to find ways to detect sharks and avoid them while spending a day at the beach.

According to the Centre Daily Times, a South Carolina delivery truck driver named Josh Rinder has a foolproof method for testing a body of water for sharks, and it is being hailed by experts as being 100 percent accurate. Here is the video he posted on Facebook in June:

The simplicity of the test has caused many to laugh and praise it for its genius, with one woman commenting, “natural science at its best.”

It highlights the fact that the ocean contains sharks—about 465 identified species of sharks, to be more precise. So, if you swim in the ocean, there is a 100 percent chance that at some point you have swam with a shark nearby. Yet shark attacks and fatalities remain incredibly low.

And as National Geographic News explains, “While sharks kill fewer than 20 people a year, their own numbers suffer greatly at human hands. Between 20 and 100 million sharks die each year due to fishing activity, according to data from the Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File. The organization estimates that some shark populations have plummeted 30 to 50 percent.”
