The surf’s definitely up at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica, California, which hosted the Third Annual Norcal World Dog Surfing Championships on Saturday, August 4th.  The surfing dog competition featured top dogs from all four-legged walks of life from across the world.

Over 50 dogs participated in the dog surfing event. It was full of tail-wagging activities that included a pet wellness fair, a dog disc competition, a “ball-fetch-in-water” competition, a costume contest and even a yappy hour.

The dog surfing heats are divided by weight class. Award categories include the Small Surf Dogs Award, Pet Renu Medium Surf Dogs Award, Stunt Puppy Large Dogs Award, the DOOG Tandem Dogs Award (which features two dogs on one surfboard), the Pedro Point Brewing Award (featuring a human and a dog on a surfboard) and more.

Some of the winning top dog contenders included:

Derby, a mohawk-sporting pup who was decked out in sunglasses. He took first in the Tandem Surf Dogs Award, where he was hanging ten with fellow pup Teddy.

Skyler, a pup who was trained by his professional surfer dad, Homer Henard. This duo took home the Pedro Point Brewing Tandem Human/Dog Award.

They say that big things come in tiny packages, and that is definitely the case with Gidget the Pug. This tiny little shredder took home the gold—twice—with the Small Surf Dogs Award and the Goughnuts Top Dogs Award.

All of these surfing dogs are winners, and part of the proceeds of this dog competition go to local nonprofit charities.

The Norcal World Dog Surfing Championship was originally inspired by Kevin Reed, who wrote “The Dog’s Guide to Surfing.” Reed proposed the idea to a Southern California hotel that hosted the first event, and from there the event took off, inspiring other dog surfing competitions around the world.
