Teen Battling Cancer Uses Make-a-Wish to Find Forever Homes for Rescue Animals
Brooklyn, a 13-year-old girl who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in December 2017, was recently approved to receive a Make-A-Wish—a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that she used to help find forever homes for 13 lucky shelter animals.
Make-A-Wish grants wishes to children diagnosed with a critical illness. While many kids wish to go somewhere or meet someone, Brooklyn used her wish to give back to animals in need.
To fulfill her lifesaving wish, Make-A-Wish New Hampshire and the New Hampshire SPCA teamed up to help Brooklyn host an adoption drive.
Known as “Brooklyn’s Adoption Day,” Brooklyn’s pet adoption drive was held on Saturday, June 30th at the NHSPCA. The morning of the event, a group of seven puppies were brought to the New Hampshire SPCA from a local kill shelter. Brooklyn had arrived early to meet and get to know each dog so she could help find the perfect pet parent for them.
The shelter opened at 11 a.m. for the event, and Brooklyn’s friends and family were there to support, wearing “Brooklyn’s Adoption Day” T-shirts.
The drive was a success and Brooklyn was able to find a forever home for all seven puppies along with three cats, two guinea pigs and an older dog.
Brooklyn tells the NHSPCA, “I love animals and I would be very content knowing I helped animals live and find new homes.” She says the most important part of her wish was knowing she was able to help.
