Toronto dog Marley was reunited with his family after taking an unsupervised joyride downtown on the local GO train.
The 6-year-old Border Collie-Shepherd mix escaped the home of owner Dorte Petersen last Sunday and walked himself over to the nearby Rouge Hill GO Station. The pup somehow ended up on the westbound train on the Lakeshore East Line, traveling downtown.
“We are still investigating whether Marley tapped his PRESTO card,” Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins jokingly wrote in a tweet.
The day was like any other; Petersen had just returned home from taking Marley for a walk. Ten minutes later, she received an unexpected call from a GO train conductor.
“They said, ‘We have your dog and not to worry. The good news is he’s safe and we’re giving him treats but he’s actually headed to Union (Station),’” Petersen told CTV News Toronto.
Two hours later, the pup was reunited with his family.
Petersen says that Marley is no stranger to the station, and they use it often to get around. “I think when he got outside he went looking for me and that’s what brought him to the GO,” she tells the outlet.
Petersen’s daughter, Kia Andersen, was grateful to have her dog back after losing Marley, aka “Marbles.” She says in a Facebook post, “Thankfully [Marley’s] cute face made him tons of friends on the train and at Union. A huge thank you to everyone working at the GO. Everyone went above and beyond to make sure Marbles was happy and got back to us safe and sound.”
Aikins was doubtful that Marley knew GO’s policy on traveling with dogs on trains, but she was forgiving. “He missed the part about needing to have your human with you,” she writes in another tweet. “He needs to come back in for questioning but we won’t be too ruff.”
