Veterinary Pathologist, Dr. Stephen Raverty, Serves Whales Well

2010/11 Premier’s Awards Regional Finalist — Lower Mainland
Category: Service Excellence

Veterinary Pathologist Dr. Stephen Raverty has an international reputation of excellence for his work with marine mammals. These mammals, like a whale or sea lion, are an iconic feature of the B.C. coastline and their deaths can attract much media attention. Finding cause of death is important and, while sometimes the animals can be brought to the Ministry of Agriculture lab, due to their size Dr. Raverty is often required to go where they are. Part of his service excellence is being available 24/7 to attend to scenes of sea life and death.

Dr. Raverty always volunteers to help other federal and provincial departments and is a resource for students, environmentalists, zoos, aquariums and government agencies. He is called to assist in crisis situations in other countries and has worked with the Inuit people to help monitor the health of their whale and seal populations.
